Other ways kids can help
We have already discussed the issues of captivity throughout this website and have suggested alternate, responsible ways to enjoy and learn about marine mammals. Avoiding facilities that hold whales and dolphins captive, and instead watching them in the wild, is the best way to show your support for marine mammal protection. But here are some other ways that kids can do their part.
Prevent Marine Debris
Marine debris, trash found in the ocean environment, is a major problem facing marine mammals (and all wildlife) all over the world. Marine debris comes in many forms, from a cigarette butt to a 4,000-pound derelict fishing net. Although marine debris is found worldwide, even seemingly small action can help.
- Reduce, reuse, and recycle!
- Participate in local beach or stream cleanups – or organize your own.
- Educate others about the problems caused by marine debris.
- Print out this great marine debris poster and post it for others to see.
Spread the Word
Sometimes travel agencies suggest or promote captive whale and dolphin activities to travelers that are not as educated as you are about captive marine mammals issues. The World Society for the Protection of Animals has developed a “Compassionate Travel: Dolphin Encounters” poster for these travelers. Print out a copy and see if your local travel agency would be willing to post it in their office.
Have you taken an action to protect dolphins and other marine mammals? For example, have you organized a beach cleanup? Has your local travel agency agreed to post the “Compassionate Travel: Dolphin Encounters” poster? Have you educated your family and friends about the issues? If so, we want to hear from you! Email us and tell us about your story. We may even highlight your story on our website.
Remember, even if you think your effort is small, when we all work together we can make a big difference for marine mammal protection!
